1958 Airstream Caravanner. More than $25k invested so far. The next owner is getting a huge head start! This is a rare model with an extra window. This project is well on its way. The trailer is fully towable and does so like a dream. Currently around 2200lbs. I was shooting for a finished goal weight of 3200lbs. I lost the place I had to work on it about 6 years ago and it’s been in storage ever since. It’s time to get this beauty back on its journey.
No expense has been spared when it comes to making sure that the work done so far has been of the best quality available. Here’s a list of what has been done so far:
-The frame has been re-welded with new steel where it was needed.
-Brand new updated axle, braking system, suspension, and 4″ lift done by Airstream of Orange County in mid-2018 with 0 miles on it. This is the same system used on their brand new trailers. All wide pictures of the entire Airstream are before the 4″ lift.
-Larger dents have been removed from exterior panels. Should be able to polish if desired.
-New LED marker lights have been installed.
-A velocity switch braking system that can work with any car has been installed.
-The subfloor has been replaced. Although the center section of the floor has been checked by multiple shops and given a passing grade, I would personally replace it with new marine-grade plywood before proceeding.
-Custom wheel wells installed.
-Brand new custom-made black, 34-gallon fresh, and grey water tanks installed with a top-of-the-line monitoring system.
-DC converter installed with mounts for two batteries under what will be the bed.
-All of the current original 110v wiring has been tested and it works and is safe. I was going to rewire the 110v and 12v with new higher voltage cabling to take an a/c down the road and of course, enough power to run a Vitamix blender in the galley!
-I have had weight distribution hitch points installed on the frame. I will include a weight distribution hitch with the sale. Makes for easy towing in high winds with lighter vehicles.
The next step was going to be replacing the windows with new tempered glass all the way around and putting new rubber seals on them. The small rear (former bathroom) window has shattered glass but all of the rest are intact. There is a lot of original window hardware but some needs to be replaced. I have the original shelf from the kitchen that I have stripped down to bare aluminum. Other than that it just comes down to framing the interior and running the gas for the appliances. My end goal was a new, modern interior with an old, classy patinaed exterior. The tires only have 2200 miles on them, but they have been sitting for 6 years so they should be replaced for safety’s sake.
I have the title in hand and a certificate and medallion from Airstream with her registered with the name Amelia Airstream.
