Meet Argo! Designer and furniture maker Daniel Chaffin designed and crafted the complete interior remodel of this 1976 Airstream Argosy. While the shell and windows are original, almost everything else has been skillfully reimagined and fabricated to take full advantage of modern materials and systems. Combined with the handcrafted fitted furniture, endless interior storage options, adorable and cozy wood burning stove, and deeply thoughtful layout, this Argosy is ready for everything from weekend getaways to full time tiny house living.

The 360 watt Zamp solar panel system, 2000 watt MagnaSine inverter, and 200amp/hr Battleborn lithium batteries make boondocking off the grid a joy. If the sun isn’t shining or you’ve blasted through your power reserves lighting up your off grid disco parties, you can recharge the batteries fully in a few hours with the included iPower generator. The new Dometic Penguin II air conditioner will keep you cool when you are plugged into shore power, and it’s also a heat pump for chilly days down to 40º. Below those temperatures fire up the Dwarf 3kw wood stove and it will radiate cozy warmth even if the thermometer dips below 0º. There is enough storage under the stove for about 18 hours of wood, lots of kindling, and all the stove tools you could need.
The front area features a dinette sofa with shoe storage drawer, open storage area, and hidden storage under the cushions. The cushions wrap around a bamboo dining table with walnut breadboard ends mounted on a Lagun swiveling mount for easy access to the seating area. The dinette can quickly be transformed into a super comfy 48”w x 92”L double bed. Next is the kitchen with its beautiful walnut countertops that waterfall to the floor. There is plenty of storage in the form of 8 full extension soft close drawers, two lid stay cubbies, a Vitrifrigo 12v Marine refrigerator/freezer, and an under sink pull out waste container. Also under the sink is a sealed and vented propane locker for the 20 gallon propane tank, and a propane on demand tankless hot water heater. The full sized stainless steal sink has a fitted custom walnut cutting board, and a tall professional style faucet/sprayer. If you look closely you’ll notice that there is no screen in the window above the sink. It is the only window without a built-in screen so that when opened the faucet can be turned outside and used as an outdoor shower. The kitchen also boasts a tall felt lined spice/cup/utensil/axe cabinet, and a small open display shelf. There is dedicated led task lighting over both kitchen countertops and a redesigned modern vent hood.
Beyond the kitchen is a hallway with full extension deep pantry drawers and a solar and battery monitoring station (with Bluetooth to connect to your phone). This cabinet wall also contains the large closet cabinets; one with open shelves, and one with a hanging rod. Above these are lift doors that reveal even more storage for towels and extra bedding. Below all of this is a removable battery/inverter access panel behind which there is room for an additional 200 Amp/hr of lithium power should you decide you need it.
The bathroom is on the other side of the hallway. Here you will find a Natures Head composting toilet, a floating walnut vanity with bypass doors, and an adorable porcelain sink. There is plenty of storage behind the bypass doors for toiletries, and a tiny built in motion activated night light softly illuminates the bathroom floor as you enter. A stand up shower with seat and walnut towel hooks completes the full featured bathroom.
At Argo’s far end is the reconfigurable bedroom with a soft close walnut pocket door for privacy. In one mode it has two twin beds each with three full sized drawers below and separate reading lights. A central night stand table separates the two beds and has yet another drawer. Beneath the two mattresses is even more storage for bins and larger items. Sliding slats span the space between the twin beds to allow the bedroom to change to a single queen+ width bed for cozy snuggling under the stars.
Throughout Argo there are thoughtful touches – usb charging points in the front and back, touch dimmers for all room lighting, illuminated light switches for outdoor lighting, and the water pump, FloorScore certified (non-toxic) Cali vinyl waterproof cork lined flooring, small armrest storage areas for keys, headlamps, cards, and miscellaneous little things, thermostatically controlled Maxx Air vent fans that work even when its raining, task lighting everywhere you need it, solid brass knobs on all doors and drawers that double as locks for when you’re ready to roll down the road, and so much more.
Argo was designed and built with love, intentionality, and obsessive attention to detail. He’s ready for life and adventure!
We left Argo unpainted so he can be colored in whatever way delights you. Go vintage two toned, or modern monotone. It’s up to you, but he needs some exterior love.
